Loans in the Philippines

Philippine banks — BPI, BDO, UnionBank, Metrobank, Security Bank — generally quote personal and housing loans on a diminishing balance, so your interest cost drops as you pay down the principal. Car financing is the exception: dealers and captive finance companies almost always quote an add-on rate instead, which looks lower on paper but works out to a higher effective rate over the same term. SSS salary loans follow their own fixed-rate, contribution-based rules rather than either of those.

Tax and payroll in the Philippines

Income tax is computed under the TRAIN law's graduated brackets, withheld from your paycheck by your employer and reconciled against BIR's rules. On top of income tax, Filipino employees also deal with SSS contributions, mandatory 13th month pay, and — for eligible employees — SSS pension and maternity benefits, each computed under its own separate formula rather than as a simple percentage of salary.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the Loan Calculator and the Car Loan Calculator?

The general Loan Calculator uses the diminishing balance method, which is how Philippine banks quote personal, salary, and housing loans — interest is charged only on your remaining balance, so the interest portion shrinks each month. The Car Loan Calculator instead uses the add-on rate method almost every Philippine dealer and financing company quotes for auto loans, where interest is calculated once on the full principal and spread evenly across the term. Using the wrong method on a car loan quote will understate the true cost, which is why they're separate tools.

Does the BIR Tax Calculator use the current TRAIN law brackets?

Yes — the Tax Calculator, BIR Tax Calculator, and Withholding Tax Calculator all use the income tax brackets currently in effect under the TRAIN law. If the Bureau of Internal Revenue revises the table, we update the calculators to match, and the "last updated" context is shown alongside the results.

Is the SSS Pension Calculator the same as my employer's retirement pay?

No. SSS pension is a separate government benefit computed from your SSS contribution history and paid by the Social Security System, independent of whatever retirement pay your employer owes you under the Labor Code or your company policy. The SSS Loan and SSS Maternity Benefits calculators are likewise specific to SSS's own rules, not general savings or leave-pay estimates.

How is 13th month pay taxed?

13th month pay (and other similar benefits) is tax-exempt up to ₱90,000 combined per year under current BIR rules — only the amount above that threshold is added to your taxable income. The 13th Month Pay Calculator computes the gross amount you're owed; pair it with the Salary Tax Calculator if you need to see the effect on your annual tax due.
